2009-10-21 [windowframe]: Well, it would be if you kicked her out for it. ;) But I don't think it's an abuse of power to ask everyone to stop antagonising each other. :P Akane didn't suggest she was going to kick anyone out, she just asked you to refrain from putting the contest down. On the other hand, I don't think you really were complaining about the contest, but about the mentality some people get that if they don't think they'll win, they don't bother entering contest at all. So how abouts we all leave it at 'oooh, look, purty entries' and carry on as before? :) I'm really impressed by the variety of very distinct styles we have so far. :D

2009-10-26 [Serwa]: Yes, deadline is a deadline. To say anyone who doesnt make it is not ambitious enough just sound stupid though.
Unless a puppy gets killed each day your drawing isnt judged, I don't see how bad it could be if the deadline is rescheduled, not even by request, but because several people were 'not ambitious enough'.

Thanks for the extra time, I will do my best to finish it!

2009-10-26 [Yncke]: I don't know if it's so petulant, [Yuriona]. As you say, time is a matter of prioritising. For example, if someone decided to skip a day out to work on the entry for this contest, a *heavy sigh* reaction is in my opinion very understandable.

I mean, I do like that people will have their entires finished or have an entry up...but I knew when the deadline was. I found out about this on the 20th..and I worked my ASS off too get it up here for the deadline. I've had other things to do also, like work etc, but I still worked my ass off and got it done...I just didn't think this is very fair. If I had the extention then I would have made my entry better than it is. I still had alot to do when I put it up. And now I can't. Because its already glazed.

Ambition has everything to do with it. Isn't that the point of a contest with a SET DATE?
If it were something that could just 'draw whenever the hell we felt like it or when you had nothing else to do that day'- the contest would never end.

I'm just a little annoyed that the people on ET have to bend over backwards for those who didn't finish their stuff. I did as well as everyone else on this page. Even those who didn't completely finish did what they could in the time allotted. We took time out to specifically do this by the due date. And I think we deserve more credit in doing so.

2009-10-26 [Kyrinn]: Extending the deadline is NOT done with every contest on ET and it is up to the mods of a contest to extend it. More than one person said they werent done so it was decided to extend five days. I pushed to get done with mine in the time frame because I too have many other things to do in my week other than sit and draw. The contest being extended is fine with me, I am just happy I was able to get as done as I could get it. In fact, I think coloring mine now would hurt its look more than help it.

contests in the real world are altered and pushed back a lot, at least where I am. But if this is such an issue, take it directly to the mods. I honestly dont think five extra days will kill any love of art you might have.

Noone asked for an extension, Several people including me thought it a bummer that we didnt have more time, speaking for myself, I only found out about this contest several days ago.

I decided to join the contest because when I looked on this page there only were 5 drawings, feeling that was a little few people, I started drawing because I thought it would be fun, and it would make the competition a little more fun to judge than when there are only 5 drawings.

I was glad to see in the days following many more drawings were added.
I accepted the deadline had come, and made no big deal out of it, even if my drawing wasnt colored.

So "you having to bend over backward for people who didnt finish it" ... give me a break. I tried hard to finish my piece, unfortunately I didnt have as much time as everyone else since I got to hear about the competition a lot later.
But I too put things aside to be able to draw. Just not whole days, so my sincere apologies if that wasnt good enough, I just thought it would be more fun for everyone if more people joined. My mistake!

So give the people who didnt fully complete their work a break. And be happy they are joining. And otherwise to really push people to finsih sooner, get a box of puppies and a chainsaw.

And I didn't flip out. I just didn't appreciate your tone when as like others here, I knew I wouldn't finish in time and had come to terms with that. The extra time is a bonus but that doesn't mean I'll get it done by the new deadline since I still have a lot of other stuff that takes priority. Ambition really has nothing to do with it in my case. (is taking a break from hot glue and craft foam atm)
Though I could point out that normally deadlines for holiday based contests on Elftown don't usually end until on or after the holiday occurs, especially when there's costumes or decorating involved. The earlier deadline for the 2009 Halloween contests was an oversight on the council's part. Oopsie... ^^;

This is the first time people have complained about others being given a few days grace. So perhaps the council, when making its decision didn't really consider whether any of the other contestants would be upset by it because well... in the 5 years we've been running contests, no one ever has. At the time I didn't know and I just put it up. I wanted to do more with it, but I didn't whine about not having time to. I delt with the 5 days I had and I stuck to it. I just don't think its fair that now people can go back and do more to theirs now when others cant. It is just a wee bit annoying. I mean we already had enough entries, amazing entries as they were. I just don't think the extention is justified.
But hey, not my call. I'm so done with it. *goes back to eating her subway and drinking her tea*. Im not arguing anymore, no point. It will never be heeded.

2009-10-26 [windowframe]: I don't think anyone here has really "whined" (not even you ;P ). And you could probably touch part of yours up on the computer if you wanted to. It's not our fault you chose a medium you couldn't alter after completion, after all. Everyone has the extended deadline - not just those who hadn't completed their entry yet. So if others who have completed their entry want to use it to make some final adjustments, they're more than welcome to. And I'm pretty sure I did just tell you that actually, we have heeded you, and next time we debate whether to extend a deadline or not we would probably take this kind of issue into consideration. But we're not psychic, and since this complaint has never come up before, we didn't predict it or consider it. But it would be even unfairer, I think, to go back on our decision now. And very confusing. This decision will stand, but that doesn't mean we won't remember your objection and bear it in mind in future, okay? :)

Maybe we should hold a contest in future of how Elftowners would repaint the Sistine Chapel if they could. :P

2009-10-26 [windowframe]: Microsoft word doesn't recognise it in its dictionary, but dictionary.com does (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/unfairer) OED however, doesn't. But, as you will see if you type just 'unfairer' into google, it's in pretty wide usage and I think, can be fairly unambiguously understood. The positive 'Fairer' is a valid comparative adjective, but that's a general trend in English - 'clearer' is a word, 'unclearer' isn't. I don't know if there's a reason that that specific form of negation can't bear a comparative or superlative form but... eh. It's informally accepted, basically. I wouldn't use it in an essay, but would in every day conversation.

That often, when querying whether words are "actual" or not, (as in, "is that actually a word?") we always take the dictionary as authoritative - if it's not in there, we can't use it. When actually, it's we who define what words go into the dictionary, not the dictionary which defines what words we can use. Then I started thinking about whether dictionaries can have a negative impact on the natural evolution of language, but I'll stop babbling now since I'm sure most people don't find it as interesting as I do. :P

2009-10-27 [windowframe]: The problem with putting slang in the dictionary is that a lot of it goes out of fashion pretty quickly, but I think most slang that lasts a decent while does eventually make it into the dictionary, but it is always marked as 'slang' or 'informal'.

This is Waka, a magical creature from the forest. He borrowed the hide from the Lynx for a mask. 3 puppies died in the progress of drawing making this.
